A little fun, if kidnapping is your bag

LEAVE
FIGS
AND
THE
BABY
WILL
BE
RETURNED
SAFELY.

I discovered a ransom note generator online and typed the first thing that came to my mind. If you have a baby, don't worry, I wasn't thinking of yours.

A smile for your Saturday

J en posted this yesterday... couldn't NOT steal and share. Makes me want to go set up a prank like that somewhere... except maybe with Skittles or something cheap... cotton candy? Paper clips? Yeah, I'm thinking it wouldn't have quite the same impact. I guess only Coke will do. Well, a Coke and a smile...

From the mouths of babes

You've probably all seen this before, but I hadn't; so when it came on its merry forwarding way to me today, I thought I'd share. It's too hot to be actually creative and write my own material, much less cook (what's that? It's watermelon for supper tonight!), so I'm letting the kids speak for me.

How do you decide who to marry?
You got to find somebody who likes the same stuff. Like, if you like sports, she should like it that you like sports, and she should keep the chips and dip coming.
-Alan, age 10

No person really decides before they grow up who they're going to marry. God decides it all way before, and you get to find out later who you're stuck with.
-Kristen, age 10

What is the right age to get married?
Twenty-three is the best age because you know the person FOREVER by then.
-Camille, age 10

How can a stranger tell if two people are married?
You might have to guess, based on whether they seem to be yelling at the same kids.
-Derrick, age 8

What do you think your mom and dad have in common?
Both don't want any more kids.
-Lori, age 8

What do most people do on a date?
Dates are for having fun, and people should use them to get to know each other. Even boys have something to say if you listen long enough.
-Lynnette, age 8

On the first date, they just tell each other lies and that usually gets them interested enough to go for a second date.
-Martin, age 10

What would you do on a first date that was turning sour?
I'd run home and play dead. The next day I would call all the newspapers and make sure they wrote about me in all the dead columns.
-Craig, age 9

When is it OK to kiss someone?
When they're rich.
-Pam, age 7

The law says you have to be eighteen, so I wouldn't want to mess with that.
-Curt, age 7

The rule goes like this: If you kiss someone, then you should marry them and have kids with them. It's the right thing to do.
-Howard, age 8

Is it better to be single or married?
It's better for girls to be single but not for boys. Boys need someone to clean up after them.
-Anita, age 9

How would the world be different if people didn't get married?
There sure would be a lot of kids to explain, wouldn't there?
-Kelvin, age 8

And the #1 favorite is...
How do you make a marriage work?
Tell your wife that she looks pretty, even if she looks like a truck hit her.
-Ricky, age 10

I like that Ricky! He can come hang out with me any time.

My creative boy

Seth is pretty nutty for this online game/program called Line Rider. He's been fiddling around with it in his spare time for a year or so, watches YouTube videos to see how the "masters" do it, and pretty much thinks it's taught him more about art and physics than school... not sure about that, but he has gotten better and better at composing lines and scening them (where you draw in art around the basic lines that the little sledder dude navigates). He spent some time last week at Grandma and Grandpa's working on a special one for me. I love it! I think you'll see why... (Sorry it's so small. My first video upload; we'll see if future ones can be bigger!)

A musical Monday... with no school!

School's out... well, for most kids. Depends on how many fake-makeup-snow-days your particular school district decided to tack on to the end of the year (right, Maizy?).

In honor of school being out, I thought I'd post some videos of a cool kid choir that I have been enjoying. I happened upon them on some blog or other that I visit semi-regularly (I've forgotten which one!), and thought this was a really cool discovery. Of course, I then find out that they are little celebrities in their own right and have been on the news and have about 5 million YouTube hits... so this isn't exactly a new find, but take a look at some of these faces. These little performers will undoubtedly pop up at American Idol auditions in about 8 or 9 years... Check out their web site; these kids are getting a piece of music education that most kids could only dream of.

I have to say I think their choir teacher is a riot, even though I want to give him a haircut. Who wouldn't love to get to sing current, fun songs in choir with their teacher playing along on the guitar or piano? I won't even paint you a visual of my childhood choir, but suffice it to say I got a really sucky grade during my 5th grade year, because rather than sing, apparently I liked to throw eraser chunks at nearby boys... alas. Blame it on the lack of inspiring music, I say.

Memorial Day video joy

I saw this video posted on a friend's blog: Triple Dog Dare Me. Check out her blog, as well as the video; it's a hoot. Meghan, the very entertaining blog writer, was once Seth's babysitter of choice (for a number of years!), and is the daughter of a dear friend. She's off to make her way in the "big city" and we wish her well with her daring adventures! I just had to repost this video. Such a good smile.

And then there's this creative video featuring an interesting take on grocery shopping. Not sure I've got what it takes to give this a whirl, not to mention how my produce already in the cart might feel as well... but still, good fun.

Happy Memorial Day! I will later post on the wicked rhubarb crisp we partook of this afternoon, following what was a truly memorable Perfect Bite (TM)-filled meal of steak for me and salmon (well, surf and turf really, I gave a wee bit of my steak away, sweet wife that I am) for the husband, with all the fixings of summer. A truly glorious way to spend the holiday, whilst wrapping up a riveting season of 24 from the dvr. Life is truly blissful.

Oh, and I should mention it before things change and I won't get to toot Ruby's little kudos trumpet: She hasn't chewed a garden hose ALL DAY. Not there's something! I know that pretty much as soon as I write this I'll go outside and something will have been chomped on, but I just wanted to get that little bit of doggy praise out there while I could! (It doesn't happen too often, as you know!)

A-ha memory!

This video/song is a couple of years old, but I loved it then, and I love it now. I am sure I have inflicted it on plenty of you, plenty of times. But I'm sure you can deal with it, in spite of the high cuteness factor.

In looking online for the Taylor video, I discovered there is a "rebuttal" movement--quite a few videos of guys in Starbucks aprons singing a response. It's pretty funny too. Of the guys who have attempted this on YouTube, this one was the best (imho) in terms of video quality.

DeepLeap: New addiction

Sad but true, these little games get the best of me. First it was Tetris, way back when. Well, I guess if you want to really dig deep, it was Centipede before that, but compared to later addictions, that one hardly even scratches the surface of my neuroses (and was painful to reacquaint myself with on the Wii, too... someone's reflexes aren't quite as nimble as they once were...). Following Tetris there were some dry years in my gaming (let's call them the "responsible, trying to hold down a job and raise a child" years), but coming back to it, I had a bit of an issue with Bubbleshooter last year... HAD to get a high score. Alas, weeks of practice ensued. Finally did get one posted online, then the desire faded. Isn't that so often the case?

And now, here's another. And in a pragmatic sense, this one has some real value. Really. I'm posting this with an eye toward the Scrabble-hungry Aunties, but there are many wordy friends out there who will enjoy this, I think.

Take a look at DeepLeap. Boy howdy, this one could suck me in for awhile...

Music meme

Here's a fun meme that Jen posted on her blog just today. I recently have been (very slowly on the weekends) coming up with a "Sher soundtrack"--songs that have been significant for me at different times of my life, so this meme plays right into that music obsession. It was a bit of a challenge to pick the artist, but I ended up going with Joni Mitchell. Sara MacLachlan was a close runner up, as were Neil Diamond, Elton John or Anne Murray! All my old childhood faves... Oh, almost forgot one: you can thank me later for not doing Roger Whittaker!

Using only song names from one artist, answer these questions. Try not to repeat a song title.

Pick Your Artist: Joni Mitchell

Describe yourself: Sunny Sunday

How do you feel about yourself: Both Sides Now

Describe where you currently live (where I am this minute...): California

If you could go anywhere you wanted to go: River

Your favorite form of transportation: Big Yellow Taxi

Your best friend is: Woman of Heart and Mind

Your favorite color is: Little Green

Favorite time of day: Rainy Night House

If your life were a TV show, what would it be called: Ladies of the Canyon

What is life to you: The Circle Game

What is the best advice you have to give: Court and Spark

If you could change your name, what would it be: Amelia

Your favorite food is: Banquet

Thought for the Day: Last Chance Lost

How I would like to die: Sex Kills (I couldn't resist!)

Your soul's present condition: You Turn Me On I'm a Radio

The faults you can bear: Not To Blame

My motto: Cold Blue Steel and Sweet Fire

I included videos of Joni that just happen to be 30 years apart... while her voice has definitely changed over time, I really like them both. She's just an amazing artist.

So do yours! Please. You can do it here in the comments or on your own blog and let me know!

99 things, done and undone

I've seen this list around at a couple of different blogs and finally decided to do it after I saw in on The Gift this week. I have been following The Gift for a bit--she decided at the beginning of her 37th year to write every day that year--and have enjoyed reading her journey through words. The many moods of Seth

It's been awhile since we first fiddled around with the superhero site Hero Factory, but I've been meaning to post some fun superheroes that have popped up around our place... Seth has conceived many different iterations...

Some days I think that is a very apt title... (love the green!)

This one fits too; he can be quite angelic...

I think this is how he'd like to see himself! Very strong and capable!

And then Grandma had to weigh in while she was visiting...

And good friend Margie sent over a little nugget as well. We couldn't help but have a good chuckle at her fur-lined cape and especially colorful name!

Last but not least is the husband's fun take! Methinks "courageous" and "Jedi" sound just about right!

My sidekick with a stick!

Sweet SIL Kim took up the superhero challenge and dialed up a little Hero Factory over the weekend. I'm not going to take issue with her not having any eyes (is that an eye patch? how daring!), or a nose for that matter. What will be of more concern to me when she comes to save the day is that she's doing it with a stick... Granted, a spectacular splintery stick, but I worry that it will be lasered/shot/burned pretty quick.

But, on the plus side, what girl hasn't ALWAYS wanted to be called a stick? Really. Someone comes up to you and says, "You're lookin' like a stick," and you say, "Cool, thanks."

Save the flying lash girl, save the world

So on my friend Jen's blog she showed off her new superhero likeness, The Superhuman Lasered Jones. Not bad, I thought, but I wonder what my likeness would be? Apparently, I'm Astonishing! How cool is that? Granted, there's a little self-selection going on--I did pick the wings after all, and how surprising is it that the whole outfit is green? Ha.

To find out who your superhero is, go to Hero Factory. A little fun for your weekend...
