Anthem
The birds they sang
at the break of day
Start again
I heard them say
Don't dwell on what
has passed away
or what is yet to be.
Ah the wars they will
be fought again
The holy dove
She will be caught again
bought and sold
and bought again
the dove is never free.
Ring the bells that still can ring
Forget your perfect offering
There is a crack in everything
That's how the light gets in.
We asked for signs
the signs were sent:
the birth betrayed
the marriage spent
Yeah the widowhood
of every government --
signs for all to see.
I can't run no more
with that lawless crowd
while the killers in high places
say their prayers out loud.
But they've summoned, they've summoned up
a thundercloud
and they're going to hear from me.
Ring the bells that still can ring ...
You can add up the parts
but you won't have the sum
You can strike up the march,
there is no drum
Every heart, every heart
to love will come
but like a refugee.
Ring the bells that still can ring
Forget your perfect offering
There is a crack, a crack in everything
That's how the light gets in.
Ring the bells that still can ring
Forget your perfect offering
There is a crack, a crack in everything
That's how the light gets in.
Maybe a bit more melancholic than I mean to be--it's Wednesday in a short week for crying out loud--but with that voice... those lyrics... he really does capture that song well. (I know I gave you a hard time about Leonard a few years back, Ma; sorry about that!)
This concept, that there is a brokenness to everything, is one that resonates with many people, however "whole" they may seem. I read a sermon called "The Broken Places" this week that I appreciated; if you've got a few minutes, take a read and hopefully you'll find the reassurance and inspiration that I did.
Happy Wednesday!

I really needed to read this- see this. Thank you. I feel a little "off" today. It's good to remember "it's" still okay...
ReplyDeleteI liked the "crack in everything" concept alot. What a great poem... and the link to the sermon with the illustration at the end... priceless.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing.
That is the kind of song that leads me to Jesus...He is the only answer to all the 'cracks' we meet up with in this world. He is the light that comes in...
ReplyDeleteBeautiful...beautiful.
